Was a 4-banger Camry. I even put the Camry dent in this one myself with no real damage other than to my ego.

Kinja'd!!!

I felt the urge to defend the Camry after the Type-R post on the front page and the “how Jalop is your car” post earlier. I don’t miss the car, but I really do miss the how little time and effort the ownership experience required.

Who dislikes the Camry and how many times should they be smacked?

There really isn’t anything wrong with it, so it’s easy to makes jokes at its expense.

I’ve been thinking lately that if I hard to find a replacement for the e90 an old Camry wagon would be awesome. As long as it has the v6 and a hitch.

See the trick is you buy another car

Now you have it

So it’s a car you’ve got, see?

My mom had her XV30 Camry since the oughts - also a 4 cyl, it has had zero mechanical issues.  AC needs a service (I hope), but that’s really it.   You’re not going to have much fun, but maintain it and you’ll never need to worry.

At one point a manual V6 of this generation was available down the street from my work.  I lightly regret not at least looking at it, but I really didn’t need another car at the time.

From what I’ve heard, neither the manual nor the V6 did much to spice up the Camry experience.

Camry’s are the business. Now that i have the Solara i really dont see a reason to buy anything other than a camry or lexus daily.

I think the only thing the the Camry has ever been criticized for is being a tad dull. T here’s really nothing about it that deserves hate, or strong emotions in general. It’s just a car.

Truth! You can’t go wrong with having one incredibly reliable car. I have a Corolla (with roll-up windows) that always gets where it needs to go. It cancels out all of the other vehicles I have that never get anywhere.

We had a ‘99 in the generic configuration ( LE, 4 cyl auto in Cashmere Beige with the Oak cloth interior ) for 13 years and 130K miles . Honestly, one of the best cars we ever owned as a family. We owned an ‘01.5 B5.5 Passat 1.8T wagon from new at the same time, and it was an interesting contrast ( we did only keep it for ~8 years... ).

We sold it to a family acquaintance’s son who used it for college and then lived several places across the country. He p ut another ~100,000 miles on it in about 5 years. By the end the car was in really rough shape cosmetically to the point that it wasn’t worth even registering, so it was scrapped.

I’m happy with life with Subarus at this point, but the ‘90s Toyotas were quite special.  I still occasionally look to see what the lowest mileage ‘97-’99 SXV30/MCV30 is listed for sale, and sometimes contemplate trying to find the wagon variant that we never got here.  Ours would have been a wagon if they sold it here.

But the 4-cyl auto I had didn’t save enough gas over the 6-cyl to have been worth chasing down.

I do think the comparable Hondas are more fun to own, I have driven one of these as a loaner and my Accord of the same era was more sporty to drive and the sleek dash and hood in the Hondas makes it feel that way too. There is no arguing the Toyotas are very good cars though, but I admit when I drove it, I didn’t want one in comparison.

I don’t like Camry s all that much because of how many times I see them, but I certainly get the appeal. Those things are cockroaches, and I respect that. If I ever did get one, rest assured, it’d be an older one. The newer ones just seem like you’re settling (also, I don’t think I’ll ever buy a brand new car in my life, but maybe I’m just being a bit of a money grubber  about it ).

I owned a 4 cylinder manual version of this generation Camry, and it was my favorite car to date. It could rip sick burnouts, surprisingly fun manual trans and good brake feel. I have since upgraded to the luxury version of this car, a 1998 lexis es300. They require little maintenance, you can service everything easily from up top in  the HUGE engine bay, and if you need parts they are everywhere. Seriously underrated cars.
